Veidt, Conrad (1893–1943), actor, was born Hans Walter Konrad Veidt in Potsdam, Berlin, in January 1893, the second son of Philipp Veidt and his wife, Amalie. While he remembered his civil servant father, a former army sergeant, as affectionately autocratic, his mother offered him constant companionship and encouraged a love of not only reading but also the then infant medium of the cinematograph. Although he was a dreamy and inattentive student who showed little aptitude for academic study, it was at school that he first discovered his talent for acting when he was invited to recite the prologue for the annual Christmas play.
