Bartram, William (1739–1823), botanist and ornithologist, was born on 9 April 1739 at Kingsessing, Pennsylvania, the third son of naturalist John Bartram (1699–1777) and his second wife, Ann Mendenhall (1696/7–1784), both Quakers. William's great-grandfather had moved from Derbyshire to America in the early 1680s. ...
