Clifford [née Lane], (Sophia) Lucy Jane [pseud. John Inglis] (1846–1929), writer, was born in Camden Town, London, on 2 August 1846, the daughter of John Lane and Louisa Ellen, née Gaspey (d. 1901). At a very early age, however, she started to present herself as a few years younger than she really was, eventually being entered by her son-in-law, upon her death, as seventy-two when in fact she was ten years older.
