Bowden, Herbert William [Bert], Baron Aylestone (1905–1994), politician, was born on 20 January 1905 at 16 Taff Embankment, Cardiff, the eldest of eleven children of Herbert Henwood Bowden, baker's assistant, later baker and confectioner, and his wife, Henrietta, née Gould.
