Chapone [née Mulso], Hester (1727–1801), writer, was born on 27 October 1727 at Twywell, Northamptonshire, the only daughter among the four surviving children of Thomas Mulso (1695–1763), gentleman farmer, and his wife (d. 1747/8), daughter of Colonel Thomas.

Hester's mother was reportedly beautiful, vain, sickly, impatient with the notion of advanced female education, and jealous of her only daughter's abilities, and allegedly disapproved of the nine-year-old ...
