Davis, William John (1848–1934), trade unionist, was born on 6 August 1848 at 263 Bradford Street, Birmingham, the son of Thomas Davis, a brass-founder, and his wife, Tharzia. As a child he received only two and a half years' education at a dame-school, though he made up for this in his teens and twenties by attending Sunday school and then a wide range of evening classes when he entered the local brass trade.
