Carstares [Carstairs], William (1649–1715), Church of Scotland minister and political adviser, was born on 11 February 1649 at Cathcart, near Glasgow, the eldest child of John Carstairs (1623–1686), the parish minister, and his wife, Janet (1625–1685), daughter of William Mure of Glanderston.
