Wedderburn, Robert (1762–1835/6?), radical, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, the illegitimate son of an African-born slave, Rosanna, and a sugar planter, James Wedderburn of Inveresk, near Edinburgh. The latter sold Rosanna when she was five months pregnant but Robert was deemed free from birth by her new owners, baptized an Anglican, and given a modicum of education.
