Carlile, Richard (1790–1843), radical publisher and writer, was born on 8 December 1790 at Ashburton, Devon, the second of the three children of Richard Carlile senior and Elizabeth Carlile, née Brookings. His father was from a Devon family, and made his living first as a shoemaker, and then as an exciseman, a teacher, and a soldier.
