Amos, Sheldon (1835–1886), jurist, was born on 1 June 1835 at St Ibbs, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, the fourth and youngest son of Professor Andrew Amos (1791–1860) and his wife, Margaret née Lax, daughter of the Revd William Lax FRS, an astronomer.
