Campbell, John (b. in or before 1720, d. 1790), naval officer, was born in the parish of Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, where his father, John Campbell (d. 1733), was minister. At an early age he was bound apprentice to the master of a coasting vessel, and is said to have entered the navy by offering himself in exchange for the mate of that vessel, who had been pressed.
