Burges, Mary Anne (1763–1813), writer, was born in Edinburgh on 6 December 1763, the youngest daughter of George Burges (d. 1786), of Berkshire gentry stock, comptroller-general of the customs, Scotland, and his wife, the Hon. Anne Whichnour Somerville. She was well educated and intelligent, and her accomplishments included Greek, Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish, with some Swedish and German.
