Stamp, Sir (Laurence) Dudley (1898–1966), geographer, was born at 11 Exbury Road, Catford, London, on 9 March 1898, the seventh and last child of Charles Stamp (1852–1935), and his wife, Clara Jane (1857–1942), daughter of Richard Evans, veterinary surgeon. Charles Stamp was a provision merchant whose children were brought up in the atmosphere of a middle-class family which, in his son's words, 'accepted success through effort as the natural reward of clean living and hard work' (...
