Perkin, Sir William Henry (1838–1907), chemist, was born on 12 March 1838 at King David's Lane, Shadwell, London, youngest of the three sons of George Fowler Perkin (1802–1865), a builder and contractor, and his wife, Sarah Cuthbert. With his two brothers and three sisters he inherited a pronounced musical talent from his father.
