Johns, William Earl (1893–1968), children's writer and journalist, was born on 5 February 1893 at Bengeo, Hertfordshire, the eldest son of Richard William Eastman Johns, a tailor, and his wife, Elizabeth Earl. He was educated at Bengeo School and Hertford grammar school, also attending evening classes at the local art school. After leaving school he completed indentures with a firm of surveyors.
