Brierley, Benjamin [Ben] (1825–1896), writer, was born at The Rocks, Failsworth, near Manchester, on 26 June 1825, the son of James Brierley (b. 1795), hand-loom weaver, and his wife, Esther Whitehead (d. 1854).
