Hirst, George Herbert (1871–1954), cricketer, was born at Kirkheaton, near Huddersfield, on 7 September 1871, the son of Mary Elizabeth Woolhouse. He left school at ten and worked first as a hand-loom weaver and then at a neighbouring dye works.
