Evans, John Gwenogvryn (1852–1930), palaeographer, was born at Ffynnon-felfed, Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire, on 20 March 1852, the only son of Thomas Evans, farmer, and his wife, Margaret, née Rees. When he was a year old his parents moved to Llanwenog, Cardiganshire, the parish from which he later coined his middle name.
