Burkitt, Francis Crawford (1864–1935), biblical scholar, was born in London on 3 September 1864, the only child of Crawford Burkitt and his wife, Fanny Elizabeth Coward. Burkitt's grandfather had migrated to London from Sudbury in Suffolk, and founded the business which his father carried on so successfully that the son had no need to make a living for himself.
