Koestler, Arthur (1905–1983), novelist and journalist, was born on 5 September 1905 in Budapest, Hungary, the only child of Henrik Koestler (1869–c.1940), Jewish businessman, and Adele Zeiteles (1871–1963), who came from a prosperous Jewish family in Prague.
