Kapitza, Peter Leonidovich [Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa] (1894–1984), physicist, was born in Kronstadt (near St Petersburg) on 9 July 1894, the younger son of General Leonid Petrovich Kapitsa, a military engineer, and his wife, Olga Ieronimovna, daughter of General Ieronim Ivanovich Stebnitsky.
