Hitchcock, Alfred Joseph (1899–1980), film director, was born on 13 August 1899 in Leytonstone, Essex, the youngest of the three children of William Hitchcock (1862–1914), a greengrocer and poulterer, and his wife, Emma Jane Whelan (1863–1942).
