Hanson, (Emmeline) Jean (1919–1973), biophysicist and zoologist, was born on 14 November 1919 in Newhall, Derbyshire, the only child of Thomas Hanson and his wife, Emma Jane Badger, daughter of a Derbyshire police superintendent. Both her parents were schoolteachers. Her father died only a few months after her birth, and she was brought up entirely by her mother, who became headmistress of a primary school. ...
