Hancock [married name Donovan], Dame Florence May (1893–1974), trade union leader, was born on 25 February 1893 in Factory Lane, Chippenham, Wiltshire, one of fourteen children of Jacob Hancock, cloth weaver, and his second wife, Mary Pepler, née Harding, who had also been married before.
