Dodds, Eric Robertson (1893–1979), classical scholar, was born on 26 July 1893 at Church Street, Banbridge, co. Down in Ireland, the son of Robert Dodds (d. 1900) and his wife, Anne Fleming, née Allen. His father's family were northern Presbyterians, descended from Scottish immigrants; his mother's were Anglo-Irish, who had a dubious claim to aristocratic connections, but had intermarried with the natives.
