Bowdler, John (1746–1823), Church of England layman and religious writer, was born at Bath, Somerset, on 18 March 1746, the eldest son of Thomas Bowdler (bap. 1719, d. 1785) and Elizabeth Stuart Bowdler, née Cotton (d. 1797), religious writer.
