Woods, Joseph (1776–1864), architect and botanist, was born at Stoke Newington on 24 August 1776, the second son of Joseph Woods, woollen draper, and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Samuel Hoare. Delicate health caused Woods to be removed from school when only thirteen or fourteen years old, and he was mainly self-taught, but became proficient in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, Italian, and modern Greek.
