Wissing, Willem [William] (1656–1687), portrait painter, is usually said to have been born in Amsterdam, probably because of the Latin inscription on his funeral monument at St Martin's, Stamford, Lincolnshire, which describes him as 'Ws Wissingus Amstelodamensis'. Buckeridge's transcription, however, alters this to 'Hagensis', suggesting he was privy to more accurate information (...
