Thorp, Charles (1783–1862), university principal, born at Gateshead rectory in co. Durham on 13 October 1783, was the fifth but second surviving son of Robert Thorp and his wife, Grace (1745–1814), daughter of Thomas Alder of Horncliffe, on the Tweed.
