Smith, Willoughby (1828–1891), telegraph engineer, was born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on 16 April 1828, son of Daniel Smith, a warehouseman. Nothing is known of his life before 1848, when he joined the Gutta Percha Company, London; he was to remain in the service of this company and its successor until he retired.
