Geoffrey Rufus (d. 1141), administrator and bishop of Durham, is of unknown parentage. It is not known to what circumstances he owed his surname. In 1114 he may have been a household clerk and protégé of Bishop Roger of Salisbury (d. 1139), and by 1116 he was possibly a chaplain in the royal household.
