Roberts, Richard (1789–1864), mechanical engineer, was born on 22 April 1789 at Llanymynech, Montgomeryshire, in the toll-house where his father, William, a shoemaker, was toll-keeper; his mother was Mary Jones of the parish of Myfod. After some schooling, Roberts was a quarryman until the age of twenty, though with a growing reputation as craftsman and mechanic.
