Beresford, James (1764–1840), writer, second son of Richard Beresford of Upham, Hampshire, and his wife, Sarah, was born at Upham on 28 May 1764. He was educated at Charterhouse School and at Merton College, Oxford, where he matriculated in March 1783. He graduated BA in 1786, MA in 1798, and was elected a fellow of his college.
