Newport, George (1803–1854), entomologist, was born on 4 February 1803 in Canterbury, the first of four children of William Newport (1777–1843), a local wheelwright, and Sarah Gillham (1778–1859) of Hackington. He attended day school in Canterbury and on 15 June 1818, he was for seven years unwillingly apprenticed to his father's trade, partly as a result of the latter's sudden bankruptcy, and took his freedom in June 1826.
