Marsden, William (1754–1836), orientalist and numismatist, was born on 16 November 1754 at Verval, co. Wicklow, Ireland, the tenth of the sixteen children of John Marsden (1715–1801), shipping merchant and banker, and his second wife, Eleanor Bagnall (d. 1804).
