Baynes, Ralph (d. 1559), bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, was born in Yorkshire. Nothing certain is known of his parentage, though his father's name may have been Adam. He attended St John's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1518 and proceeding MA in 1521, when he also became a fellow. He proceeded BTh in 1532 and DTh in 1555.
