Lax, William (1761–1836), astronomer, was the son of William Lax of Ravensworth, North Riding of Yorkshire. He was educated at Kirkby on the Hill, North Riding of Yorkshire, and was admitted as a sizar in 1780 to Trinity College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1785 as senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman, was elected a fellow of his college, and proceeded MA in 1788. In 1795 he succeeded ...
