Lawson, James Anthony (1817–1887), judge, was born in Waterford, Ireland, the eldest son of James Lawson, pro-collector, and Mary, daughter of Joseph Anthony. Lawson was educated at the endowed school in Waterford, and entered Trinity College, Dublin, on 21 October 1833. Elected a scholar in 1836, he obtained a senior moderatorship in 1837 and was a gold medallist, with a first class in ethics and logic.
