Hughes, Joshua (1807–1889), bishop of St Asaph, was born on 7 October 1807 at Nevern, Pembrokeshire, the son of Caleb Hughes, a miller, and his wife, Magdalen. He was educated at Cardigan and Ystradmeurig grammar schools, and at St David's College, Lampeter (1828–30), where he was placed in the first class in the examinations every year, and where he gained prizes for Latin and Welsh essays. ...
