Hasell, Elizabeth Julia (1830–1887), writer, was born on 17 January 1830, the second daughter of Edward Williams Hasell (1796–1872) of Dalemain, near Penrith, Cumberland, where he was an extensive landowner, and his wife, Dorothea, daughter of Edward King of Hungerhill, Yorkshire. She was carefully educated at home, at the same time teaching herself, with little or no assistance, Latin, Greek, Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese....
