Hamilton, James Archibald (1748–1815), astronomer, was born in or near Athlone, co. Westmeath, Ireland, the son of Colonel Gustavus Hamilton and his wife, Jane Givardot. He attended the Royal School in Armagh, and entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1764 (BA 1769). There he became actively interested in natural philosophy and astronomy.
