Gray, Robert (1809–1872), bishop of Cape Town, the son of Robert Gray (1762–1834), bishop of Bristol, and Elizabeth, née Camplin, was born on 3 October 1809 at Bishopwearmouth, co. Durham. He entered as a commoner at University College, Oxford, in 1827, and took his BA degree in 1831, gaining an honorary fourth class after having originally presented himself for a pass degree.
