Sykes, Eric (1923–2012), actor, comedian, and writer, was born on 4 May 1923 at 238 Henshaw Street, Oldham, Lancashire, the second son of Vernon Sykes (1900–1975), a cotton mule spinner, and his wife, Harriet, née Stacey (1900–1923), who died in childbirth.
