Gedy, John (fl. 1370–1401?), abbot of Arbroath, is first recorded in 1370, when he already held the abbacy of Scotland's greatest Tironensian house. Nothing is known of his earlier career. In 1371 he attended Robert II's coronation. When the monastic church was struck by lightning and suffered severe damage from fire in 1380, the monks had to be transferred elsewhere while money was raised and repairs carried out; the abbot was closely involved in this process, which was still in progress in the mid-1390s.
