Gardner, Alan, first Baron Gardner (1742–1808/9), naval officer and politician, was born at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, on 12 April 1742, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel William Gardner of the 11th dragoon guards, and Elizabeth, daughter of Valentine Farington of Preston. In his passing certificate (dated 15 February 1760) he is said to have spent upwards of six years at sea, 'part whereof in the merchants' service'. He joined the ...
