Shearing, Sir George Albert (1919–2011), pianist and composer, was born on 13 August 1919 at 67 Arthur Street, Battersea, London, the youngest of nine children of James Philip Shearing (1873/4–1957), coalman, and his wife, Ellen Amelia, née Brightman (1873/4–1950), who cared for her family by day and helped to support them by cleaning railway carriages at night.
