Lane, William Henry [performing name Juba, Master Juba] (c. 1824–c. 1854), dancer, was probably born about 1824 in New York City. Lingering uncertainties around his biography derive from two major causes. Like most poor blacks of his era he left behind no written records. Problematic, too, is the fact that he spent much of his life working in blackface minstrelsy, a theatrical trade built upon masking and plagued by identity theft.
