Minghella, Anthony (1954–2008), playwright, screenwriter, and film director, was born on 6 January 1954 at 76 Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Isle of Wight, the second of five children of Edward Minghella (b. 1921) and his wife, Gloria Alberta, née Arcari (1930–2014), both second-generation offspring of Italian immigrants. He grew up in a bustling household with three sisters, a younger brother, and a spirited maternal grandmother, where everyone was expected to lend a hand to make a success of the family business, the manufacture and sale of quality ice cream at a high-street café.
