Holders of the Royal Institute of British Architects royal gold medal for the promotion of architecture (1848–2010)

In 1848 Queen Victoria, patron of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), instituted a gold medal for the promotion of architecture. Every year the council of RIBA was to recommend to the sovereign any distinguished British or foreign architect, or eminent person, or group, who had contributed to the science of architecture. No award was made in 1901 (on account of Victoria's death) or in 1924. In 1999 the medal was awarded to the city of Barcelona.
