Galpin, Francis William (1858–1945), Church of England clergyman, musicologist, and antiquary, was born on 25 December 1858 in Dorchester, the eldest of three children of John Galpin (1813–1883), an ironmaster, and his wife, Emily, née Hamsford (d. 1899). He is remembered for his outstanding contributions to the scholarship of musical instruments, although these were not achieved at the expense of his pastoral work.
